Anchorhead Coffee

If you’re a Seattle coffee fiend, you may already know about Anchored Coffee‘s new cafe downtown. But you may not know about the Quaffle – and no, that’s not a reference to Harry Potter’s favorite sport.  The Quaffle is a waffle made from croissant dough, so basically it’s just as magical as Quiddich.

Fluffy and light it’s not, but if you’re after crispy, thick, and buttery pressed pastry, you’ve come to the right place. The cafe is a satisfying place to get work done or catch up with a friend, with retro decor and comfy and spacious surroundings.

And the coffee isn’t bad either!

 

Mr West

So many waffle cafes, so little time. I’ve enjoyed Sweet Iron, Arosa, Metier, and many more – and now I can cross Mr. West off my list.  It’s a sweet spot to work (solid wifi), sip coffee, and devour some excellent waffles. I had to choose between several sweet and savory options – there’s a whole waffle bar with toppings to put on your buttermilk or buckwheat waffle. But I went with The King, topped with drizzled almond butter, bananas, bacon, pecans, and maple syrup.

The buckwheat waffle stood up nicely to the load of toppings and the almond butter was a nice twist on the classic peanut butter. Elvis would have approved. To wash it down, I got the Coffee Egg Cream – a combination of coffee, milk, chocolate syrup, and seltzer.

Certainly not the same as the NYC classic, but enjoyable nonetheless (and so few places outside NYC even offer an egg cream). This place is a winner, and an easy walk from the downtown light rail station.

Toast

Cute coffee shops are one of the reasons I love living in Seattle. Toast, with free wifi, spacious work space, and excellent espresso, takes things a step further with freshly made waffles and gourmet toast. I was more excited for the waffles.  They have all sorts of fancy toppings, and you can mix and match as desired. I got half of a s’mores waffle:

Perfectly crisp waffle, a little toasted marshmallow in each square, fudge drizzled over the whole thing, and graham cracker crumbs to make it perfect. It was the perfect dessert for breakfast, but I didn’t stop there. I got another half with cream cheese, jam, and whipped cream – they call it The Tart.

I actually liked this one even better. The cream cheese gave it a nice tang and the jam was like a complex syrup. I’d like to come back and try the toast – or the BLT waffle. Worth the fight for parking in Ballard!

Metier

Where do you go when you need to repair your bike, take in a gym class, get some wifi-dependent work done, and oh, down a few coffees/waffles/beers while you’re at it? There’s a cafe for that! Metier in Cap Hill specializes in bicycle gear & repairs, while also offering a fitness/wellness center. The cafe is, fortunately, not particularly focused on (physical) wellness, although I probably could have used a fitness class or a bike ride after consuming a waffle and an apple hand pie. The space is set up nicely for socializing or working, and in addition to espresso drinks they also have several beers on tap.

I’ve been on a bit of a waffle and maple syrup kick lately, so I started with a plain waffle with butter and extra syrup (I was relieved that they use the real stuff, not some flavored corn syrup like so many places in Seattle). The guy behind the counter was also nice enough to give me a sample of the sourdough waffle with little pearls of sugar inside – the sugar produces pockets of steam making the waffle moist, and the sourdough acts as a natural leavener, so no bitter baking soda taste! (My family does something similar with sourdough pancakes.)

As for the hand pie, more filling would have been nice – it was an apple-cheese mixture, which sounded amazing but ended up being a bit underwhelming because there just wasn’t enough of it – but the crust was nice. Regardless, Metier is a useful and delicious Cap Hill cafe – have a bite or get a workout in!

 

Seattle Biscuit Company

In my quest to eat pretty much every biscuit in Seattle, I made a special effort to track down the Seattle Biscuit Company food truck. I was pleased to find it Saturday morning in the Central District at Chuck’s Hop Shop (which, by the way, has excellent beer and food trucks along with a pleasant little patio). Not to be confused with Biscuit Box, which I wrote about in a previous entry, the Biscuit Company is proud of “hand-building” their biscuits and using locally sourced ingredients.

The menu was mostly savory (and intriguing – I’d love to try the Che biscuit, with bacon, egg, cheese, ham, pickles, apple butter, and mustard) but there were a couple sweet options. The one that caught my eye: The Hickey Dewberry – just bacon and a generous helping of homemade jelly.

imageI loved the combo of sweet and savory – the jelly was the perfect counter to the salty, and perfectly crispy, bacon. In fact, the homemade jelly was my favorite part of the whole concoction – bright and intensely flavorful, sweet but with no shades of Smuckers. As for the biscuit, it was well-crafted and had good flavor. I did wish for a bit more flaky-ness and a crackly exterior, but overall it gets the thumbs up.

Empire Espresso

In need of a sweet treat and a strong espresso one dark winter day, I took myself down to Columbia City to check out Empire Espresso. I had heard about their waffle concoctions – all sorts of exciting topping combinations (lime and powdered sugar!), and their coffee (single-origin, made for hipsters). I also knew it would be a cozy and friendly place to get some work done, and I was lucky to come at a time when it wasn’t jam-packed.

I got my espresso plus the nutella banana waffle. The coffee was intense and gave me the boost I needed to chip away at my never-ending supply of work. The waffle was large they sure didn’t hold back on the bananas:

Which was fine, since ever since I visited Oaxaca (see my “on the road” page) I’ve been obsessed with banana-based desserts. And nutella always works for me! My only complaint was that the waffle, while perfectly fresh and not over or undercooked, was a bit on the heavy/salty side. It seemed like it was cornmeal based but I could be wrong. In any case, I would have preferred a lighter, fluffier, and sweeter waffle. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my overall experience here and I can see why this place is so popular!
